It’s well known in Greek mythology that Hades kidnapped Persephone and took her to live in his realm, leaving her grieving mother Demeter to roam the earth and permit nothing to grow for 6 months. This was the first winter mankind had ever seen. Finally Zeus intervened and demanded Hades return Persephone to her mother. However, it was revealed that Persephone had eaten 6 pomegranate seeds while she was there, and it was the law that those who ate the food of the dead must remain. So a bargain was struck where Persephone would stay 6 months in the Underworld with Hades as his bride and 6 months above with her mother.
Yet…what if she had eaten those seeds on purpose? After all, a goddess doesn’t need to eat unless they want to. Perhaps it had been something Hades had said to her in those dark days below, surrounded by the spirits of the dead.
It might even have been something like this…
- Chorus:
- Be my light in the darkness
- A candle burning bright
- For it’s so dark and cold, here
- In this endless night.
- Comfort me in darkness
- It’s all that I have known
- Be my light in the darkness
- My love, my own.
- From the moment I first saw you
- A maid so full of life
- Flowers bloomed around your feet
- And glistened in the light
- I knew that I must have you
- Forever at my side
- You are so far from all I’ve known
- ‘Tis you must be my bride.
(Chorus)
- And there you stood a’dancing
- With flowers at your breast
- And daisies wound about
- The golden wheat that is your hair
- Lips as red as roses
- Skin as soft as dandelions
- And whiter than the lilies
- That grow in the valley wild.
(Chorus)
- ‘Twas morning bright and cloudless
- When you first saw me
- My sudden appearance
- Made you faint beneath a tree
- I took you up aboard my chariot
- And down below we flew
- Now it is to you
- That I must prove my love be true.
(Chorus)
- You sit there, cold as marble
- And you sigh a weary sigh
- Your light is ever-fading
- As you pine for fields wild
- Could you ever love me?
- Is there any hope at all?
- The sight of your pain gives me grief
- I live just for your smile.
(Chorus)
- I give you back your freedom
- And return the light to you
- The flowers and the rivers
- The sunlight and the trees
- For the hardest part of loving
- Is to let the jesses free
- But if the falcon loves you
- Then she will return to thee.
(Chorus)
