What was that about not saying anything interesting around a bard? Here’s a cute little ditty that I came up with while retaining for royalty at the most recent Pennsic. The bards Widow Kate, Dahrien, Lucia, and Kiriel helped with polishing and improvement, acted as wonderful sounding boards, and suggested options for verses.
It’s to the tune of “The Irish Jig” or “The Night Ramble”, a late period song by the ever-popular author, Anonymous.
- Chorus:
- A life in service is grand, you see
- For it is a duty we fill with glee
- To trail in the wake of nobility
- A life in service is grand, you see…
- Our Princess is smart and brave and true
- It’s terribly difficult when you’re new
- We know it’s a stress on her loyal crew
- But never upset her – for she knows kung-fu
- (Chorus)
- It’s wonderful to serve a Prince so brave
- Who sees maidens to rescue and dragons to slay
- But after they’re rescued they all want to stay
- And who has to cart all the maidens away?
- (Chorus)
- It is a great honor to serve the Queen
- Chasing her down from scene to scene
- To keep up with her’s an impossible dream
- So we banded together to form a tag-team
- (Chorus)
- Isn’t it great to serve the King
- At his beck and call for anything
- Like to stand by the privies holding his bling
- But the stench of his armor’s a physical thing.
- (Chorus)
